The Mongla Port Authority (MPA) has set an aim to earn Tk600 crore in revenue and handle over 12 million tonnes of cargo in the 2025–26 fiscal year, projecting a stronger role as Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport.

According to MPA Deputy Director (Media) Md Makruzzaman, the port achieved a record performance in FY2024–25 by handling 10.4 million tons of cargo and earning Tk 343.33 crore in revenue, along with a profit of Tk 62.1 crore—203% higher than the targeted Tk 20.5 crore.

Building on this momentum, the authority anticipates approximately 900 foreign commercial ships will dock at the port during the current fiscal year. In just the first 48 days of FY2025–26 (till August 17), Mongla has already handled 10 lakh tonnes of cargo from 103 vessels, including 5,332 TEUs of container cargo. In July alone, it processed 4,459 TEUs, 518 reconditioned vehicles, and 6.5 lakh tonnes of cargo.

MPA Chairman Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman said ongoing upgrades—including dredging of the approach channel, container terminal expansion, and digitalization of customs and operations—are driving Mongla’s transformation into a regional logistics hub.

He noted that with full utilization, the port could annually handle 1,500 foreign ships, 1,00,000 TEUs of containers, 20 million tonnes of cargo, and 20,000 reconditioned vehicles.

“Achieving these targets would not only strengthen national trade capacity but also create thousands of jobs in the Khulna-Bagerhat region,” he said.

The port is also gaining significance as a transit gateway for India’s northeastern states and Bhutan under bilateral agreements. To ensure smooth operations, the MPA has been holding regular meetings with shipping agents, C&F agents, stevedores, and other stakeholders. An Internal Business Development Standing Committee has also been formed, already delivering positive results in boosting vessel arrivals and trade activity.

With its strategic location and rising capacity, Mongla Port is positioning itself as a vital alternative to Chattogram, easing congestion at the country’s main seaport and supporting balanced regional development.
